Alamieyeseigha Advises On Assets Sharing
Bayelsa

Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has advised Rivers and Bayelsa states governments to fashion out acceptable framework for the sharing of assets and liabilities.

Alamieyeseigha gave the charge in an address to the joint committee on assets and liabilities between the two states in Port Harcourt.

While emphasising that the creation of Bayelsa State was meant for administrative convenience, Alamieyeseigha charged the committee to maintain the historical bond of the founding fathers by being their brothers' keeper.

Represented by his Deputy, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, the governor urged members of the committee to adopt amicable resolution of differences between the two states, rather than resort to court actions.

In his speech at the occasion, the Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili, also represented by his Deputy, Sir Gabriel Toby, said state creation should be seen as a source of strength and bargaining at the centre, rather than instrument for dividing the people of the two states.

According to Odili, posterity will not forgive the committee if they fail to arrive at a consensus.

Also speaking, Attorney-General of Rivers State, Mr Ajumo Gobia and his Bayelsa State counterpart, Mr Talford Ongolo, said there was no veritable alternative to dialogue.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has been lauded for providing subsidy on fertiliser distribution to states to boost agricultural development.

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan said this when delegations of House Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and Federal Ministry of Agriculture paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Yenagoa.

According to Jonathan, such a gesture has provided window for farmers to embark on aggressive food production for the teeming populace.

While emphasising that more attention should be given to the agriculture sub-sector through improved budgetary allocations, the deputy governor said mechanised agriculture could save Nigeria from hunger, acute food shortages and attract foreign exchange earnings. He urged the joint committee to adopt strident measures of receiving remittance of funds by state governments.
