Agric Minister Advocates Mechanised Farming Osun Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Adamu Bello, has urged all tiers of government and corporate individuals to take mechanised farming as a priority so as to reduce food shortage. He said this in Osogbo, Osun State during the official commissioning of the 300 tractors purchased by Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, adding that mechanisation is one of the viable options for attracting youths to agricluture in order to replace our ageing farming system. The minister who represented President Olusegun Obasanjo at the ceremony said the use of mechanised farming would reduce the percentage of labour involved in primary agriculture. He said mechanised agriculture also reduces drudgrey, increase farm income, transform production and if properly managed can jump-start numerous agro-allied industries. He said, "once a nation can feed itself and have surplus to export to other countries, the physical and socio-economic health of its citizenry are guaranteed and commended the state government for the laudable gesture, saying that it would go a long way in boosting the state's agricultural development. In his speech, the state governor, Prince Oyinlola said the purchase of the tractors was meant to revolutionise agriculture in the state. He said with the purchase, farmers would have access to mechanised farming which would in turn increase food production. He, however, enjoined the beneficiaries to use them judiciously for the overall development of agriculture.
