Selection Scandal Rocks Eagles
Another selection scandal is set to rock the Super Eagles ahead of their crucial World Cup tie in Angola on Sunday as Kick Off can exclusively reveal that last-minute replacement Adewale Dauda Wahab has only made limited appearances for Italian club AS Roma this past season to again question the yardsticks used to pick players for the national team.
Coming on the heels of declaration by NFA boss Ibrahim Galadima that Christian Chukwu should not experiment in the Eagles campaign for both the 2006 World Cup and African Nations Cup, 19-year-old midfielder Wahab, who only made his debut for Roma in October when he was brought in for the last ten minutes in the Uefa Cup first round match versus Varder Skopje of Marcedonia, has now been shockingly included on the trip to Angola on Wednesday.
The new Eagles invitee is, along with another Nigerian youngster Olusunkanmi Ajide, mainly a youth player at Roma and for a player who made a total of only four appearances all through the past season (1 Serie A, 2 Italian Cup, 1 Uefa Cup) his call-up is bound to raise a few eyebrows in a country that prides itself with an abundance of soccer talent.
"At best he should have been invited to the Flying Eagles, not Eagles," said a disappointed NFA official. www.kickoffnigeria.com findings also showed that he only made his Serie A debut for Roma, who placed runners-up to AC Milan, last month in the final match of the season for the club from the capital city against Sampdoria.
The match at Sampdoria, which ended in a goalless draw, was a formality match as it would have had no bearing on the final standings as Milan were runaway winners of the championship while it was mathematically impossible for third-placed Juventus to catch up with Roma.
Backers of the Port-Harcourt-born player have boasted that "all the Wahab needs is 15 minutes on the pitch" to prove himself.
Last July, another mystery star, Onoriode Omagufi, who allegedly features for Cobh Ramblers in the lower Irish leagues, was smuggled into the Super Eagles team for the friendly international against Venezuela in London.
He was an absolute disaster with top stars like Joseph Yobo coming out to blast officials of the NFA for dragging the good name of Nigerian football in the mud with such a call-up.
