Greek Win Lifts Latvia Portugal's upset by Greece in the opening Euro 2004 match is a warning to the favourites that small teams can cause surprises, Latvia coach Aleksandrs Starkovs said yesterday. "The Portugal result is a lesson on how the little teams can beat the favourites," Starkovs said at training for their opening Group D game against the Czech Republic in Aveiro tomorrow. The tournament hosts were beaten 2-1 by Greece in Group A on Saturday. "Greece showed very good defensive tactics," added Starkovs, whose side are given little chance in a group also including former European champions Germany and the Netherlands. Starkovs has one minor injury concern with utility player Juris Laizans pulling up after an hour of the practice with a leg problem, but he said it was not serious. The Latvians, surprise qualifiers for the tournament on the back of a fast counter-attacking game, have played one practice match since arriving, a 5-1 win over local third division side Anadia with five different players scoring the goals. Starkovs, who said the team were enjoying the attention of large local crowds at their training sessions, will be looking for the same luck as Greece when they meet the Czechs.
