Euro 2004 Against Racism Organisers of Euro 2004 and Europe's governing body Uefa joined forces with former players on Saturday to promote the latest initiatives of Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE). Just hours before Portugal were due to begin Euro 2004 against Greece , Gilberto Madail, head of the organising committee, launched a reception to promote FARE, which has been fighting racism in the game for five years. He outlined how FARE had been working alongside Uefa and the European Parliament to set up workshops, campaigns and a telephone hotline to enable fans to report racist incidents. William Gaillard, Uefa's director of communications, said his organisation was proud to be associated with FARE and was playing its own part in helping to stamp racism out of the game. He said: "Uefa has offered funding and exposure at major events such as this. "On our own part we are increasing punishments and establishing stronger dis-incentives to racist behaviour." There was some disappointment among the delegates as the Mozambique-born legend Eusebio failed to show up. But former Ghana captain and Bundesliga player Anthony Baffoe and ex-Chelsea and Bari defender Paul Elliot were present. "My family had come to watch me play for Bari against Lazio in Rome but the racist abuse they suffered was so bad that at half-time I had to ask the police to escort them from the ground," said Elliot. "That was 14 years ago but unfortunately similar problems still exist in Italy and around Europe."
