Glo Premium: Enjoying Contract Rates without Signing One?
When contracts are signed, they not only stipulate the "considerations", but also state in unambiguous terms the conditions which must be met to enjoy such benefits. Is this what Glo Premium stands for? Tunmise Adekunle asks

In his book, Modern History Sourcebook, Jean Jacques Rousseau wrote; " Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains". Although contracts in themselves have far reaching advantages, they also put certain limitations to behaviour. When contracts are signed, they not only stipulate the "considerations", but also state in unambiguous terms the conditions which must be met to enjoy such benefits.

The considerations refer to the benefits which means the goodies in the contract. The conditions refer to the responsibilities which are the demands which must be met before the parties could realise the benefits. So what happens in a case where it is "come and take the benefits" without the stringent conditions of a contract?

Looking at what the Glo Prepaid Premium product is about, could one say it stands for just that or not? Put in a lay man's language, is it a case of enjoying all the advantages of a contract package without the stringent conditions attached to the contract?

What is Glo Premium? The Premium is Glo Mobile's special offering which aims to reward regular high users of the network with low rates enjoyed by those on the Postpaid (contract) platform, but absolving them of the tedious documentation of the post paid package. With a monthly access charge of N2,500, Glo Mobile knows that only subscribers who call for more than 140 minutes per month can benefit maximally from the advantage of the low rate offered by Glo Premium. As a mark of the company's principle of fairness, justice and transparency in pricing, Glo Mobile made it clear to its subscribers upfront that this unique offering is beneficial only to mid and high end users. Glo Mobile advises its subscribers who are not high users of phones to stick to the Classic offering of the company.

What are the benefits? One benefit is that the Premium user enjoys the same rates with a normal Post Paid subscriber on the Glo Mobile network without signing any contract.

The advantages are many: No deposits; no documentation (by both parties).

From another front, while he enjoys the low rates meant for Post Paid subscribers, the product enables him to still control his phone expenses by only spending as much as he wants to spend, thereby keeping to his budget. For example, if the Premium user decides to keep his weekly phone expenses at N3000.00, all he does is buy a N3000.00 recharge card and loads. At the end of the week, he knows that he has spent N3000.00 on calls. This puts him in a position to ensure that an increased need for more phone expenditure will necessarily be marched by an increase in output. For example, if his use of the Magic Plus offering of the network has increased his weekly bill, he directly associates it with the relevant information which was served him by the network, which would have cost him more money in other areas. For example, at the press of his button he gets flight schedules, news of the day and a host of other information which would have cost him more money and time but for the service. He spends a little more on his phone, but saves a lot more in other areas- this is true value.

A comparison of the Glo Premium package with what is available in the market makes interesting revelations. While the closest package offers a N24 per minute flat price for all calls, Glo Premium offers a lower rate for calls within the network at N19 per minute, while the off-net charge is N24 per minute. This means that for every on-net call, the user of premium saves N5 per minute, instantly. This brings a minimum savings of N700 in 140 minutes. With geometric increases in the subscriber base of the Glo Mobile network, there is no doubt that Glo Mobile subscribers seem in for a good time.

It is important to emphasize that other products of address the need of an occasional high user, Glo addresses the needs of a regular high user and continues to give him this advantage all through the weeks, months and years.

Again, while the Premium incorporates Glo Mobile's trade mark of pay by the second, the closest offering does not include this offer in its package. What this means is that the Glo Mobile subscriber, who is a premium user, continues to save money as he keeps his discussion precise. This is in addition to the lower charges he gets as a result of his choice of the Glo Premium offering. For the Business centre, it is double advantage. While the Glo network charges by the second, the eventual user may pay by what is convenient to the center, the minutes. This is most likely a money spinner for business centres.

On special offers, Glo offers Friends and Family. This service is not available with competition's closest offering which is an imitation of Glo's package. It is like saying, "you have had enough and so should not ask for more". The Glo Prepaid Premium seem not to believe that a customer has been given enough. It continues to extend as many offerings as possible to the subscriber driving up the total value delivered. The Friends and Family enables Glo Mobile subscribers to register four numbers which are called most regularly for an automatic 10 per cent discount. This further reduces his call bills at the end of the day. For a business centre, it is much easier. He registers four numbers that are called very regularly. While the regular caller who wants to keep in touch with father, mother, children, a close relative or friends may not be given the discount, the center further increases its profit margin as a result of this. For a business user, Glo offers the highest return on investment.

Apart from the above, the purchase motivation stems from the superior coverage of the Glo network, the bouquet of value added services including SMS to e-mail, Magic Plus, MMS(which is not offered by competition), which indeed give the Premium user comparative advantage over similar products offered by others. Also important is the fact that with Prepaid Premium, the subscriber does not have need to remember dial codes to be able to enjoy the benefit of lower rates. From facts available, it is easy to deduce that Glo Premium stands for contracts signed, that does not only stipulate the "considerations", but also state in unambiguous terms the conditions which must be met to enjoy such benefits.
