Publish Federal Government’s allocation, Makarfi challenges Obasanjo

By Sukuji Bakoji

Bureau Chief, Kaduna

Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi has challenged  President Olusegun Obasanjo to order publication of  monthly allocation to the Federal Government to convince Nigerians on its poster slogan of accountability and transparency.

The inability of Abuja to publish its own allocations for public perusal, he said at the weekend, is the height of injustice as well as paying lip service to the principle of open governance.

Markafi barred his mind to newsmen in Kaduna in commemoration of the 5th anniversary of democracy in the country. He lamented that the Federal Government has failed to lead by example.

“Rather it leads by precepts”, he stressed, and wondered why the government publishes monthly allocation to states and councils while its own lion share remains top secret.

Said he: “There is no justification whatsoever for the Federal Government to continue to publish the monthly statutory allocation to states and local governments whereas Nigerians don’t even know how much is its own monthly allocation.

“I think the best bet is for the Federal Government to publish its own monthly allocation too, to convince Nigerians that it observes the principle of accountability and transparency in governance”.

Markafi vouched that that his administration has no skeleton in its cupboard as its audited accounts are up to date.

He has already directed the Ministry of Finance to publish the statement of accounts from 1999 to 2003 for the citizens to peruse how much the state has received from the Federation Account and how the funds were spent.
