The one-day MOS
Engineering Golf Tournament took place at the Elephant Club Ewekoro Sunday with
club member Jamiu Shokunbi carting home the trophy having garnered 41points in
the competition decided on stable-ford.
Shokunbi edged out
fellow club-mate Keith Barnard to the top place while Toyin Akinola was
relegated to the third place with 39 points.
Speaking with Daily
Independent shortly after he was handed the winning prize, the
handicapper 12 said he started the day quite well as he finished the front nine
on 42 gross while the back nine wasn’t so palatable. “The front
nine was quite easy for me but the back nine was quite rough. I was quite
fortunate that I played well on the first nine holes as I dropped valuable
points. On hole 17 I had a double boogie and that would have robbed me of the
prize if I had not done well on front nine. I could not get my hands on what
went wrong but I just realised I wasn’t playing well. I was beginning to lose concentration. I was
lucky to win”.
The just ended
general strike may have affected the turn out of participants as the number of
female players that made it to Ewekoro could be counted on ones fingers. For
the Men’s event about 60 players played which is a far cry from the
expected figure.
MOS Engineering
representative, Olakitan Aka said they were however happy with the organisation
of the 3rd edition of the amateur event while adding that the turn-out was
impressive. “When you look at the situation leading to the championship,
I m talking about the strike action that paralysed all activities until Friday
when it was called off, you would agree with me that the turnout was not too
bad”, expressed Aka.
