NYSC suspends posting to Plateau crisis areas

FOLLOWING incessant sectarian crises in some parts of Plateau State, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has suspended posting of corps members to crisis prone areas in the state.
NYSC's Director-General, Brigadier Walter Oki, said the service took the action to safeguard the lives of the corps members.
He spoke at the weekend during a head-count of corps members in the state. There are about 2,500 corps members deployed to the state.
During the head count at the NYSC temporary camp on Zaria Road, Jos, Oki explained that he was personally present to ascertain whether corps members actually lost their lives during the mayhem.
According to the NYSC chief: "The primary reason for the head count is the sectarian crises that occurred in Plateau State. We want to be sure that no corps member is missing because some parents are worried and we want to allay their fears. If it is proved that corps members are missing, then we will start looking for them. But we do not pray for such."
Corps members earlier posted to trouble spots had been withdrawn and re-deployed to relatively peaceful areas.
Oki explained that the organisation was in contact with warring communities to work out arrangements to guarantee the safety of corps members posted to such areas.
But at the headcount exercise, it was discovered that most corps members were absent, as their colleagues said many of them had travelled out of town and could not make it because of the fuel price strike.
At the NYSC camp, an official said: "We are aware that a lot of them took permission to go home. We have compiled the list of those absent and we will get in touch with their parents."
Most members took permission to travel home, especially during the state of emergency slammed on Plateau State.
