Police drop plan to eject slain officers' families
By Sunday Odita

FAMILIES of deceased police officers in Lagos State will no longer be ejected from their late breadwinners' quarters.

Those affected are mostly widows of slain policemen who were given May 31, 2004, as deadline to quit the quarters.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Police, Mr. Isaac Israel Ajao told journalists at the weekend that the ejection order had been rescinded.

Ajao said the attention of the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Tafa Balogun had been drawn to newspaper reports where the widows urged him to intervene in the matter.

Ajao said in view of the development, the IG had decided to allow the affected widows and families of the deceased policemen to remain in the barracks.

The position of the IG, Ajao said, was in line with his welfarist programmes.

The authorities concerned like Police Works and Housing Department have been directed to abide by orders of the IG.

The families of the officers who died in active service were ordered by Police Affairs Ministry and Police High Command to quit the quarters in order to give room for other policemen without accommodation. This forced the widows to appeal to the IG to save them from the ordeal the implementation of the directive would force on them.

The widows are yet to be paid the benefits of their slain husbands.

The women had queried in their reports: "Now that quit notices are served to us, where do the police authorities expect us to go
