Govt to introduce electronic passport, says Ayu
From Simeon Nwakaudu, Makurdi

MINISTER of Internal Affairs, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu has declared that forging of Nigeria's international passport would soon be a thing of the past, as his ministry has perfected plans to introduce electronic ones.

Exchanging views with reporters in Gboko, Benue State, Ayu stated that Nigerians were tired of the embarrassment posed to the nation by the forgers, hence, the need for forge-proof passports.

His words: "In the immigration service of my ministry, we are working on the production of an electronic passports, which nobody can forge. Very soon, there will be nothing like the Nigerian passport that can be forged".

He noted that the new electronic passport would have clear fingerprints of holders, which can be verified at computer database spread across the nation.

On prison decongestion, the minister stated that the president would soon hold stakeholders meeting aimed at finding solutions to the problems of the prisons.

According to him, Nigeria's prisons congestion is not the fault of the Internal Affairs ministry, as many Nigerians erroneously believe.

He said: "Many Nigerians are not aware that my ministry is not responsible for prisons decongestion. This is the responsibility of the judiciary and the police".

Ayu added: "We are pained that some people have been kept in detention for too long without prosecution or conviction. If they had tried these people, there will be no problems of congestion."
