NEMESIS may have caught up with a police inspector (name withheld) who two weeks ago shot and wounded a commercial driver and a female passenger in Ekiti State as he has been arrested by state police command.
The inspector had led a team of policemen to a road block between Aramoko and Ita-Ido in the state when the incident happened.
It was gathered that the commercial bus, a Toyota Hiace with registration number Ekiti XA 293 YEE was coming from Ikole-Ekiti to Ibadan when the policemen at the check point flagged it down.
The policemen were alleged to have demanded money from the driver, Mr. Kehinde Adeniyi, who told them that the minimum denomination on him was N200, which he could not give out.
When he could not get N20 to give to the policemen, he pleaded that he should be allowed to go.
Immediately without clearance from the police, Adeniyi drove off towards Ijebu-Ijesa.
Unknown to him, the policemen who insisted on extorting money from him began pursuing the vehicle. The detained police inspector shot at the vehicle at close range.
The bullets injured the driver and a passenger sitting close to him.
However, the state police command in a statement at the weekend said the police inspector is being detained and presently facing disciplinary action for reckless handling of fire arm. It added that investigation into the incident has commenced to ensure justice.
The statement signed by the command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Inyang, however, denied reports in some newspapers (not The Guardian) that lives were lost in the incident. He said: "the driver was injured on both legs, while the female passenger by the driver's side was also injured on her thigh."
