Adamawa extends curfew to Yola

FOLLOWING clashes between Moslems and Christians in a nearby town, the Adamawa State government has imposed a curfew on Yola.

According to the government's spokesman, Willie Zalawie, the move was adopted to prevent more violence.

The ethno-religious crises in Plateau State had sparked off revenge riots in Kano during which many people lost their lives.

In the Adamawa town of Numan, a dusk-to-dawn curfew has been declared following recent clashes between Christians and Moslems over a long standing dispute on the rebuilding of a mosque which was destroyed in a communal clash last year.

The latest fighting began when the local chief, a Christian, allegedly complained that the minaret overlooked his palace.

Zalawie said the dusk-to-dawn curfew had been extended to Yola, to ensure that the presence of displaced people fleeing violence in the town of Numan did not incite further rioting.

According to him, the crisis was related to religion and sentiments could be easily whipped up.

The Red Cross stated that in two days of fighting, 41 people were killed and 145 injured while at least 2,000 people were displaced when their homes were razed to the ground.

The Police have now reinforced deployment in the area, which is reportedly calm.

The state government has also ordered that the chief steps down and directed that the mosque be rebuilt in a less controversial location.
