That Total petrol station
SIR: Total Oil (Nigeria) Plc is one of the oldest oil companies in Nigeria and as such one would expect that it would be one of the best corporate citizens of Nigeria, setting a good example to newer oil companies.
For Total Oil to even think of building a petrol station on Osborne Road highway, which anyone knows would bring untold hardship to motorists on a daily basis and a traffic standstill when there is a petrol shortage with 300 or 400 cars queuing for petrol, is a situation which no sensible person or corporation would wish to impose even on its enemy! It is a sad reflection on the corporate image of Total Oil (Nigeria) Plc.
The proposed petrol station has been condemned by both the government and the residents' association of Dolphin and Osborne estates, as well as VIIRA (Victoria Island/Ikoyi Residents' Association). One would have expected Total to totally demolish the structure and turn it into a green belt or public park. Instead, perhaps Total is playing for time, when a new and foolish government would come one day and give it a go-ahead! If this is not the case, why keep this ugly eyesore still standing
As if this were not enough, Total Oil (Nigeria) Plc has another plot on Ozumba Mbadiwe near 1004 Flats in Victoria Island. Are we to expect another petrol station on that already very busy, congested highway
I am pleased to learn that Mr. Alain Champeaux, Total International President, has been visiting Nigeria. I am using this medium to appeal to him to prevail on his Nigeria branch to demonstrate that Total is a good corporate citizen by cancelling these two potentially dangerous deathtraps and by ensuring that Total Nigeria Plc will not do what its own parent company dare not do in France.
I also appeal to Nigerian shareholders of Total Oil Plc to persuade the company to abandon these projects and demolish the structures.
A.B. Fafunwa,
Lagos
