Imo Govt seeks immediate resolution of boundary disputeseugenia okpara, Owerri IMO State Government has appealed to the National Boundary Commission to expedite action in the resolution of boundary disputes in the country. The state Deputy Governor, Ebere Udeagu made this appeal at the weekend when members of the House of Representatives Committee on Special Duties called on him at the Government House, Owerri. He told the team that the state has maintained a record of being one of the most peaceful states in the country, and we cannot afford to allow any, thing to destroy that record let alone boundary disputes between us and any of our sister states in the geo-political zone. Udeagu disclosed that Imo State has submitted all the relevant documents relating the boundary dispute with Abia State to the National Boundary Commission, adding that the screening has not been done due to what he called logistic delays from Abia State. Regarding the dispute between the State and Rivers State, the Deputy Governor explained that the matter has gone to the Supreme Court after both High and Appeal courts had ruled in favour of Imo. He assured the visiting House of Representatives members of their security through out their stay in the state and promised them of every assistance that they would need to facilitate their assignment in Imo. Speaking earlier, the leader of the team, Hon. Atai Aidoko Alli, explained that they were in the state in continuation of their tour of boundary dispute areas in the oil producing states. He said that the tour was designed to acquaint the Committee members with the problems which had over the years prevented a peaceful and successful resolution of these disputes in these areas. Said he: We embarked on this tour to acquaint members of the committee, as well as the federal legislature with the problems that had hindered a complete resolution of the boundary disputes between the various states in the Niger Delta. We are aware that these disputes have lingered for a long time and decided to visit these areas to see things for ourselves. Meanwhile, the 27 local government council Chairmen in the State have been directed to set up boundary adjustment committees to cater for disputes among communities in their council areas. Engr. Udeagu noted that it would not be in the interest of the State to allow the various Communities in the State to kill themselves over boundary problems when it could nipped on the bud.
