Robbery Charge Against Shot Cyclist Shocks NLC From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed shock at the armed robbery charge leveled against Mr. Elijah Ani, the motorcyclist that was shot by the police at the NLC secretariat in Abuja on the second day of the fuel strike last week. In a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, by NLC President, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, referred to an earlier letter dated January 14 concerning the death of Mr. Ambrose Mamah from Enugu State and Ani's injury. "You will recall that we drew your attention to the killing of Mr. Ambrose Mamah and the shooting of Mr. Elijah Ani on the leg by the Police under the Command of CP Lawrence Alobi and DSP D. M. Ibrahim. "We are however sad to inform you that our efforts to secure the release of Mr. Elija Ani through our lawyer was blocked by the Police as the AC (CID) intimated him that Ani is being framed for armed robbery. "In view of your earlier directive to officers and men not to use live ammunition to control peaceful protests and your often-quoted appeal to the public to trust the police, we would like to believe that the perpetrators of this shameful act cannot represent the mainstream police", Oshiomhole said. The NLC President called on Balogun to not only order an immediate investigation into the shooting incident but order the release of Ani. "Those who hide under the state to commit heinous crime against fellow human beings must be brought to face the law", he said.
