FG to Repatriate 17,000 Refugees from Cameroon

The Federal Government will this week, begin the repatriation of Nigerians who fled the country to Cameroon in 2001 as a result for clashes between cattle rearers and local farmers on the Mambilla Plateau area of Taraba State.
A statement from the National Emergency Agency, (NEMA) noted that the technical committee established by the Federal Government under the chairmanship of NEMA was set to repatriate 17,000 Nigerians who fled in the wake of the crisis.
In a pre-repatriation visit to Taraba, NEMA Director-General and chairman of the committee, Alhaji Salihu Makarfi stating Federal Government's commitment to the restoration of peace and tranquility in the area also promised that all social amenities destroyed during the crisis will be restored through a partnership arrangement between the Federal Government, the Taraba state government and United Nations donor agencies.
NEMA and the other donor agencies said Maikarfi are ready to assist the people rebuild houses, repair hospitals and schools in order to ensure the people come back to live a normal life.
Represented by his special assistant, Mr. Kenneth Nsor, Alhaji Maikarfi however said that peace rests with the people and he asked the local people of Taraba to accept their kith and kin when they eventually come back to the country read the statement signed by NEMA press secretary, Mr. Biodun Oladunjoye.
Community leaders, religious leaders and representatives of the Fulani and Mambilla tribes assured the committee of their desire to ensure that no hostility resurfaces between the two groups again.
Hostilities broke out between Fulani cattle rearers and local farmers on the Mambilla in 2001 resulting to the flight of about 26,000 to Cameroon.
As a result the Federal Government constituted the technical committee comprising of officials from NEMA, Nigerian Refugee Commission, Department of the State Security Service, the Nigerian Police Force, Taraba State as well as representatives of Sardauna Local Government, the Consulate-General of Nigeria in Buea South West Cameroon and the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Immigration and Humanitarian Affairs.
