CPR Wants Nigerian's Death in Libya Probed
Constitutional Rights Projects (CRP) has condemned the gruesome murder of a Nigerian, Mr. Chinedu Dominic, who was allegedly tortured to death by Libyan police over alleged armed robbery.
The group described the gruesome murder of Chinedu who resided in Ubari, Libya as barbaric, unjust and a violation of right to life contrary to the provision of African Charter of Human and People Rights.
A statement by Executive Director of CRP, Mr. Yinka Lawal, confirmed that the deceased was arrested on April 3 without any clear evidence to prove that he committed the offence preferred against him.
He emphasised that Chinedu was not arrested on the scene where the crime was committed, claiming that the Libyan police arrested him based on unreliable source, insinuation and without any proof to show that he truly committed the offence.
He added that the deceased was never arraigned for the alleged offence, neither was he provided with an attorney who could defend his case before he died under serious and terrible torture and dehumanizing treatments on April 8.
He further noted that "it is quite disheartening for such to occur at a time the Libyan Government is trying to restore relations with the West and other international community after several years of being ostracized due to the abuse of human rights".
Lawal therefore asked the Libyan government to quickly conduct full-scale inquiry into the unjust arrest, unlawful brutalisation and untimely death of the deceased.
He suggested that the post-mortem examination should be carried out on the corpse so as to ascertain what actually led the demise of Chinedu.
While urging the Libyan government to bring the persons resposible for his death to book, he also called on the Federal Government to intervene in the matter in order to forestall further occurrence of such act.
