Anosike Seeks Emordi's Prosecution
Senator Emma Anosike has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tafa Balogun asking that the Police investigate and prosecute Mrs. Joy Emordi for tendering forged documents under oath before the National Assembly/ Governorship and Legislative Houses Election Petition Tribunal, Awka, Anambra State, presided over by Justice G.M. Nabaruma.
According to a petition dated June 7, titled Re: Case of Forgery, Perjury and Impersonation Against Mrs. Joy Emordi and one Alhaji Dauda Ajagu and another, and addressed to Balogun, Anosike noted that, "the Police have a statutory duty to perform by ensuring that the suspects in this case are arrested, proper investigation carried out, and all indicated persons charged to court for prosecution.
"Pursuant to various provisions of the electoral law 2002, and the Criminal Code Cap. 77 Laws of the Federation, 1990, one need not overemphasize the fact that, the actions of the suspects named in this petition along with those who may have conspired with them, aided or abetted them in any way or manner, whatsoever, is unlawful and punishable accordingly.
"I hereby urge you to order investigation into these very serious violations of the laws. It is my carefully considered opinion that, failure to allow the law takes its course in matters like this constitutes the primary reason why so many people are willing to take laws into their hands. Similarly, it is also responsible in large part for the disrespect many Nigerians have for our laws, and in effect the Police, the constitution and the Rule of Law," he further said.
The senator however further argued that, "it is obvious that the offence of forgery has been committed here. Similarly, the offence of impersonation was equally committed. Apparently, telling lies under oath is no less a criminal offence. I know the Police is competent to investigate these offences and accordingly prosecute the offenders.
"I am ready to furnish the Police with all necessary materials needed for the prompt prosecution of the suspects, including copies of the forged documents, witnesses, among others," Anosike stressed.
