Kwara Poly ASUP Chairman Suspended The running battle between the local academics of the Kwara state polytechnic and the management took a new turn yesterday with the indefinite suspension of the branch chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Comrade Ola Adefila. The registrar of the polytechnics Mrs. Victoria Osundahunsi cited section 33(4) of the polytechnic Edict as the authority relied upon to put Adefila in the cooler. In the letter dated June 14,2004 the registrar in a signed letters addressed to Adefila said, "having thoroughly considered the contents and positions taken in all the relevant communications, I am to convey your immediate suspension from duty in accordance with the provision of part VI, Section 33 (4) of the" Kwara Polytechnic Edict, 1987 until further notice". "You may be required to appear before the appropriate disciplinary committee at short notice. You should therefore remain with easy reach until the letter of your employment listen has been satisfactorily disposed of". ASUP had dragged the management and the chairman, governing council of the institution, Prof, Shauib Oba Abdulraheem to court over the management, plan to downgrade and adjust downwards the scales and salaries of academic staff of the institution. The case which was slated for hearing on June 10 could not hold because of the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress to protest increase the price of petroleum products (worried by the impicing crisis, the state government had a fortnight ago summoned parties to a meeting at the Deputy governor's office where it resolve that the union should apply for a long adjournment of increase to give room for meaningful negotiation towards resolving the crisis.
