UNICEF Pledges N33m Aid to FCT From Andy Ekugo in Abuja The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) yesterday pledged N32.5 million in cash and equipment to the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (MFCT) for the eradication of polio, girls' education, child protection immunisation and HIV/AIDS prevention. During a programme implementation agreement signed by the Minster of Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and representatives of UNICEF, it was revealed that the areas of focus in the programme include Abaji, Abuja Municipal and Bwari Area Councils where programme convergence and inter-sectoral linkages would be demonstrated. The Programme Implemen-tation Agreement (PIA) signed yesterday according to Mr Raymond Akor UNICEF Field Officer who signed on behalf of his organisation, is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which enumerates areas of cooperation between UNICEF and the MFCT in programme co-ordination, management and funding support. The Minister stressed that the co-operation between MFCT and UNICEF has been beneficial to the Ministry in that the administration has committed about 75 per cent of its 2004 budget to the provision of Healthcare services in the Territory. He commended in particular the pace-setting UNICEF-assisted Model Primary school in Kuje and further revealed that the school has been chosen as a model for primary schools in the FCT. He also promised to ensure the full implementation of the Child Rights Act which is only applicable to the FCT as well as releasing the counterpart funding as soon as the budget is passed by the National Assembly.
