World Bank Approves $160m for Irrigation in Nigeria The World Bank has approved the sum of $160 million for the implementation of irrigation projects in Nigeria. Similarly, the Bank has revealed its intention to redesign key document for the implementation of the projects in order to avert conflict between farmers and pastoralists across the country. The team leader in charge of the Bank's irrigation projects, Dr. Sidi Jammeh, made the disclosure during a courtesy visit to Governor Ahmadu Adamu Mu'azu at the Government House, Bauchi, as part of his visit to the state to hold discussions with stakeholders. Jammeh said World Bank officials would hold discussion's with the State Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders on the launching of the Fadama two project, adding that the first phase of the project was fraught with hitches because only farmers' interests were protected, a situation which precipitated crises between them and the pastoralists. He said having realised that both parties had legitimate rights and claim over land and water resources, the team would hold discussions with all stakeholders including hunters, distributors and marketers with a view to sharing ideas on the success of the project. Jammeh, who disclosed that the World Bank had approved the sum of N300 million for phase three of the irrigation project, noted that phase two of the project would contribute to agro-pastoral production, create job opportunities in the rural areas as well as reduce rural poverty. Responding,Governor Muazu commended the Bank for designing programmes in conformity with the tradition, culture and expectation of benefiting communities.
