Niger Assembly Moves to End NULGE Strike From Jide Orintunsin in Minna Moved by the effect of the three-day-old strike by local government employees in Niger State over non-payment of two months salary, the state House of Assembly has advised the executive to source for funds and off-set salary backlog. In a motion for urgent public importance, the Assembly called on government to quickly look for ways and means of resolving the face-off between it and local government employees, following the industrial action declared by NULGE since Thursday.s The State Branch of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), had two Mondays ago notified the state government of its intention to call all its members out of work by Thursday June 10, due to the inability of the state to pay the April and May salaries. A motion by the Chairman, Committee on Labour and Productivity, Hon. Yakubu Salihu Kakihum, expressed concern over the continued withholding of the state local government funds by the Federal Government, an act which has brought untold hardships to council workers. The non-payment is as a result of withholding of Council funds of five states, including Niger, bby the Federal Government. Contributing to the motion, Hon. Abdul-Hammed El-Waziri, from Kontagora constituency called for caution, adding that confrontation can not solve the crisis. The lawmaker, along with Hon. Mahmud Abdulrahman, called on the state government to look for ways of paying the council workers, as the non-payment of their salaries has began taking it toll on workers families.
