'Community Should Contribute to Health Sector'

Any meaningful effort aimed at addressing the health need of Nigerians cannot be left in the hands of government alone but should be complemented by contributions from relevant groups within the community.
These views were expressed by the Matron of Benin-based Saint Philomena Catholic Hospital, Rev. Sister Martina Ogbekhiulu, while addressing newsmen on activities marking the 63rd anniversary of the hospital.
According to her, "it was in recognition of the important role that certain groups can play in providing better and affordable health facilities to the people that St Philomena was established by the Catholic Diocese of Benin in 1941, as a missionary medical and maternity centre."
Ogbekhiulu said adequate healthcare delivery should be of concern to every individual and group in the society, "because the overall performance of the other sectors of the economy is hinged largely on the health of the individual member of the community, as they say, health is wealth."
She added that notable Nigerians today were born in the hospital but lamented that the hospitlas, however, are in need of vital facilities, including professinal para-medical training schools, "hence the hospital will be launching a N250 million appeal fund on the June 25, towards an extensive expasion and redevelopment programme."
Ogbekhiulu, urged "all individuals and organisations to contribute to the health sector in whatever way they can," saying St Philomena would need the fund for such project as modern laboratories and diagonistic services, emergency, surgical and mortuary services as well as the establishment of a school of nursing and upgrading of its school of mid-wifery.
She noted that Nigeria still had a lot to do to catch up with medical and healthcare standards in the the world today, but maintained that the need "to help bridge the yawning gap" has often prompted her mission to establish health and educational institutions, which always took into consideration the high level of poverty in the society.
