New Customary Court Judges Want Laws Updated Osun By Lola Adewoyin Newly sworn-in members of the Grade C Customary Court in Osun State have asked for the immediate review and update of customary court laws and rules to meet up with modern standards. They have also called for periodic seminars, workshops and in-service training for members, to improve the quality of judgement. Speaking on behalf of the members immediately after they were sworn-in by the Osun State Chief Judge, Justice F.O. Ogunsola, in Osogbo recently, President of the Iwara Grade C Customary Court, Oba Adewale Kazim, the Awara of Iwara, said the state customary court laws were archaic, as they fell short of modern trends. To make their job easier, he implored the chief judge to make copies of the judiciary Code Of Conduct available to all members. He added that the task besto-wed on them is onerous, but they would not betray the confidence reposed in them as they will at all times, imbibe self-discipline. Kazim said any unwholesome act by any member of the court will undoubtedly affect the reputation of the judiciary and "we are bound to live up to expectation and strictly adhere to our oath of office." He commended members of the state Judicial Service Commi-ssion (JSC) and staff of the justice ministry for painstakingly going through the numerous applications before them, to get the right candidates. He also called for an upward review of remuneration of members to enhance performance. Among those sworn-in, is Chief Edward Olasupo Awofisibe who will serve as a member of the Iwara Grade C Customary court in Atakunmosa East Local Government area of the state.
