LG Poll: Uzodimma's Case for Hearing June By Ben Nwabuwe Hearing has been fixed for June 22 and 23, in the election petition filed by Mr. Ferdinand Uzodimma of the People Democratic Party (PDP) at the Orlu Zone of the Imo State Local Government Election Tribunal. Uzodinma, according to the petition, is challenging the return of Dr. Emmanuel Ogbenta of the same party as chairman of Oru East Local Government Area during the March 27, local polls. Joined in the petition are the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), the Chief Electoral Officer of the Commission, the Electoral officer, Oru East Local Government Area and the returning officer of the ISIEC area office. In the petition with reference number ORZ/LGEP/3/04, Uzodimma contended among other things that he was the PDP's nominated and sponsored candidate for the election. He averred that after the election which he was declared winner, ISIEC in defiance unlawfully announced Ogbenta winner through the state owned media. Uzodimma therefore, asked the tribunal to void Ogbenta's return on the following grounds: that the Ogbenta was at the time of the election not qualified to contest the said election as he was not the sponsored candidate of the PDP, stressing that he, was nominated thus leaving room for him to and contest the election which he was unlawfully excluded from during the announcement of the results by ISIEC.
