Presidency: 'Disunity, Bane of S/South'
From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City

Catholic Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. (Dr) Ebosele Ekpu, has blamed political leaders of the South-south geo-political zone for contributing for why the presidency has eluded the zone since 1960.

He also noted that the inability of the South-south zone to capture the presidency was occasioned by their inability to speak with one voice when issues of national discourse was addressed.

Ekpu, who made the assertion, while thanking invitees who graced the dedication ceremony of Saint Anthony Catholic Church, Uromi, warned that the zone would continue to be relegated to the background in the scheme of things unless its leaders learnt to be less selfish but united upon a common cause of purpose in liberating their people from political domination.

He pointed out that the South-south has only "been able to produce two (military) Vice-Presidents since independence, without a single President in the last 43 years because of lack of unity among leaders from the zone.

He stressed that the Esan people have been able to produce great men like Chief Anthony Enahoro, Prince Albert Okogie, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu (who was present), Chief Tom Ikimi and Chief Tony Anenih.

He lamented that there was hardly any evidence to show that these personalities have been able to groom people to take over from them as prominent local leaders.

"Prince Albert Okogie is over 80 years", he observ-ed, "Chief Anthony Ena-horo will be 81 next month. When you have left the stage, who will take over from you?," he querried.
