'How PDP Can Maintain Lead in Future'
From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki
The Chairman of Abaka-liki Local Government council and the Chairman of Ebonyi State Asso-ciation of Local Government Chairmen (ALGON), Chief Emmanuel Uguru has warned that if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wants to continue to record success in future polls in the country it should never neglect the grassroots.
Expressing his views at the recently held workshop for local government chairmen in Abuja, organized by the national chairman of PDP, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Uguru said he and his colleagues benefited immensely from the workshop because it made them feel that although they were very far away from the center, they were still part of the system that must contribute significantly in the plans and actions of the party.
Speaking recently in Abakaliki, the chairman said that it gladdens his heart to know that his party, the PDP, is taking the development of the grassroots seriously, stressing that the success or failure of any government in Nigeria is dependent on how it prioritizes development of the grassroots.
Uguru also said the workshop enabled the Chairmen to know that they and the people they represent are significant members of the party and stated that what will determine the success of the PDP will be how those at the higher echelon of the party would want to involve the grassroots in running the party's affairs, advising that the PDP should at no time alienate the grassroots in its activities.
He said that another gain of the workshop was that a clearer definition of how the local government and their states would relate was outlned adding that "this would enhance greater and more peaceful co-existence bet-ween the state government and the local government councils".
The ALGON chairman said that the workshop, which touched on many aspects of managing the local government, dwelt on political, administrative, financial and political issues, which according to him, has not only rejuvenated their hope in the democratic system but also outlined ways they could best administer their local government councils. Uguru, said the Chairmen learnt from the cross fertilization of ideas at the workshop and were kept abreast of events.
