Plateau: Lawmaker Chides Obasanjo From Hammed Shittu in Osogbo A member of the National Assembly, Hon. Mudasiru Hussein has accused President Olusegun Obasanjo of taking law into his hand by proclaiming a state for emergency in Plateau state in flagrant disregard of the constitution of the country. Hussein representing Oshodi/Isolo federal constituency under the platform of Alliance for Democracy (AD) in Lagos state, said "there was no part of Nigeria constitution that allow Mr. President to annul the elected governor and State House of Assembly in the nation policy." According to him, "it is disheartening that President Obasanjo could go against the constitution of Nigeria, moreso when he knows the procedure of declaring a state of emergency as contained in the constitution." Hussein said "let me tell you that the AD caucus and some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the National Assembly are not in support of such move, because it is illegal and unconstitutional but Presi-dent Obasanjo went ahead to proclaim it." He added that "it is when there is war that Mr. President could declare a state of emergency and what happened in Plateau state was not a war but misunderstanding between two ethic groups." Hussein, who stated that the declaration of state of emergency in Plateau state was a mockery of democracy, pointed out that "it is not a good omen for the nation policy." He stressed that President Obasanjo did not believe in the rule of law, noting that "that is what is affecting the peace and progress of the nation." Hussein, however, decla-red that the only way forward in the Plateau crisis was to call the groups together and resolve the matter in a round table conference so as to move the areas forward.
