Abia deputy gov faces impeachment

By Uche Nwosu

Special Correspondent, Umuahia

Abia State Deputy Governor Chima Nwafor has been served with an impeachment notice. It was sent to him on Monday following a six-point letter read out on the floor of the state Assembly by Christopher Enweremadu.

The letter was signed by 11 of the 24 members.

He was requested to inform the Assembly within two weeks why he should not be sacked for allegedly involving himself in activities which tend to undermine state security.

The Assembly was surprisingly recalled from recess on Monday. It resolved through a voice vote to quickly dispatch the letter to him and Speaker Stanley Ohajuruka was mandated to ensure that he received it within 24 hours of the resolution.

Information Committee Chairman Donatus Nwankpa confirmed the development in an interview. He said the Assembly acted on its constitutional role by issuing the notice to Nwafor and that his reply will determine the next line of action.

He added, however, that the notice does not imply that he is guilty already.

Said Nwankpa: "The process of removing a governor or deputy governor is not just as easy as presenting a motion and getting a two-thirds majority, it needs thorough explanation and debate. What happened today is like giving a query to someone to explain within 24 hours.

“But this is to explain within two weeks, according to the constitutional provisions, why the occupant of the office should not be removed for so and so act, and definitely I believe that the House is made up of responsible people, objective and God-fearing, who will consider their next line of action based on the reply of the deputy governor”.

He disclosed that he was keeping an open mind on the impeachment move because "the deputy governor is from my constituency”.
