Displaced Warri Women Protest From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri. No fewer than 50 women displaced in the on going military operations in selected riverine communities in Delta State, yesterday protested their eviction and appealed to the state to allow them and their families return to their homes to save them the agony of being refugees in their own land. The women, most of them with babies strapped on their backs, besieged the Governor's Office Annex Warri yesterday, where they interrupted the weekly State Security Council meeting presided over by the Deputy Governor, Chief Benjamin Elue. THISDAY checks revealed that the women who bore placards with various inscriptions were protesting their eviction from Warri Corner, a shanty settlement said to have been a notorious criminal hideout playing host to illegal oil bunkerers, sea pirates and militant groups. Some of the placards read, "Gov. Ibori, we are homeless under the scourge of the sun and cold, Is the demolition and sacking of residents of Warri Corner a conspiracy against the Ijaws". Madam Gloria Oromoni who led the protesting women said in the course of the raid on the community by troops of the Joint Task Force (Operation Restore Hope) many families have been displaced.
