Sales Tax: MAN Calls for Police Protection By Crusoe Osagie Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Olawale Akinpelu has called on the Nigeria Police to protect its members from harassment from the local militias in Lagos State. Akinpelu who spoke with THISDAY yesterday in Lagos, explained that only Lagos State local militias such as the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), and others in that category, could be used to harass manufacturers in the state over the controversial sales tax. "We believe that the police cannot be used by any state to pursue a cause that goes against the rulings of the court. So in the mean time we seek the intervention of the police to protect our members, their employees and factories in Lagos State," he said. He explained that the manufacturers have not contravened any law by refusing to pay sales tax to Lagos State government since the appeal filled by manufacturers, which also calls for the stay of execution of the sales tax law is still in court. "After the judgment by the Lagos State High Court asking manufacturers to pay sales tax on intra-state sales, we appealed and also called for a stay of execution so by that we have not contravened sales tax," he said.
