Farmers Want $8m Cocoa Funds Probed From Dipo Okunmuyide in Ado-Ekiti Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria (CFAN), has appealed to President Oluegun Obasanjo to instutute a probe panel into the spending of $8milion released by the Federal Government to Cocoa farmers through the federal Ministry of Agriculture. Secretary of Ekiti State Chapter of CFAN, Mr. Oloyede Aipete, in a statement made available to THISDAY in Ado-Ekiti, accused the Minister of Agriculture, Mallam Adamu Bello and PDP deputy governors of hijacking the presidential initiative meant to improve the lots of cocoa farmers. According to Eipete, the $8million is already causing serious disaffection between cocoa buyers and the association, He alleged that the Minister embarked on programmes which were not in the interest of cocoa farmers, marketers and buyers, adding that most of the products purchased to increase the output of farmers are actually irrelevant to the farmers' needs. He cited the importation of jute bags costing abour N200million by the Minister inspite of protest by farmers, adding that the imported bags are not useful to them.
