Police Foil Students Demonstration, Arrest 50 Niger From Jide Orintunsun in Minna Police marred a peaceful demonstration by students of Niger State College of Education Minna on Monday, over non-payment of of their scholarship. More than 50 of the protesting students were arrested. The students numbering about 300 had resorted to a peaceful demonstration to Government House, Minna, with a view to complaining to the governor Abdulkadir Kure, following the inability of the government to pay their 2003/2004 busary/scholarship. As soon as news of the planned protest got to the public, a detachment of about 50 armed policemen were dispatched to mount a road block in front of the headquarters of the Niger State Transport Authority along Paiko road, a kilometer away from the college. THISDAY gathered that the placard-carrying students who demanded the immediate release of their busary/scholarship were however, sent back by the police at about 1:30pm in front of the Niger State House Motel. Policemen later moved into Sango, the neighborhood were some of the protesting students had taken cover and effected the arrest of some while others were picked from taxi cabs and private and public vehicles on their way to their homes. The action of the students which jolted the provost of the college Prof. Ibrahim Kolo made him to summon the congress of the students in the school auditorium before the state Commissioner for Education Alhaji Usman Gwarijiko arrived the campus to addres them. In his address the Commissioner blamed the non-payment of the scholarship to the withholding of the state funds by the Federal Government, promising that as soon as the empasse with the Federal Government is resolved, the state government will effect payment of their entitlement.
