FG to Spend N2bn on Water Projects
Ekiti
From Dipo Okunmuyide in Ado-Ekiti

The Federal Government will spend about N2 billion on various projects that will improve water supply to Ekiti State within the next three years.

Minister of State for Water Resources, Mr Bashir Ishola Awotorebo who disclosed this while on a visit to the state over the weekend said the projects include rehabilitation of dams, purchase of generating sets, construction of reservoir and boreholes in major towns and rural parts of the state.

Awotorebo who visited Egbe Dam located in Gbonyin Local Government area of the state summoned the contractor handling the rehabilitation of the Dam, George Wimpey Nigeria Limited, to appear in his office today to explain why he abandoned the project.

He gave the order when he discovered that work had stopped at the dam for the past two years despite paying 58 per cent of the total cost of the contract.

The minister disclosed that the rehabilitation of the dam commisioned in 1989 by the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida was initiated by the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) under the regime of late General Sani Abacha before his ministry took over with the inception of Obasanjo's civilian government.

The dam, according to the minister, is one of the biggest in the counry and has the capacity to provide water for 66 communities in Ondo and Ekiti States if fully rehabilitated, adding that it was a matter of serious concern that the project was abandoned.

Awotorebo who donated 320 hand-pumps to the state governor, also visited Ayetoro Ekiti booster station in Ido-Osi local government area of the state to inspect a brand new 1,500 KVA generator supplied to the station by his ministry to improve water supply.
