'Allocate Five Per Cent of States Budgets to Health' Bauchi From Segun Awofadeji in Bauchi A call has gone to state governments to allocate five per cent of annual health budget to repreductive health to improve its service quality and enhance access to health facilities in rural areas. Reviewing the State of Reproductive Health Management in Bauchi State during an interview with THISDAY shortly after a Press briefing at the NUJ Press Centre, the Field Office Manager of Vision Project, an international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) involved in reproductive health issues, Mrs. Juliana Nathaniel, expressed worry at the high maternal mortality and morbidity rates despite continued efforts by all stakeholders. According to her, "the vision project viewed with seriousness, the alarming rate in which HIV/AIDS is spreading", and urged both men and women to play safe. She said various segments of the society have important roles to play in order to redress the situation, pointing out that government particularly has to come in with an elaborate approach "through legislation, increased budgetary allocation and better supervisory mechanism to save lives especially of women and children who are more vulnerable".
