By Ayodeji Adesina

As Nigerians marked the eleventh anniversary of the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presi-dential election widely believed to have been won by late Chief M.K.O.Abiola last wekend, the leader of the Alliance For Democracy (AD) caucus in the Senate, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi has said June 12 symbolises Nigeria's democracy day.

In a speech he delivered recently at an occasion organised by Epe division Descendants Union in the United Kingdom, the lawmaker said the day represents democracy, liberty, freedom, emancipation, and selfless sacrifice of individuals for societal advancements.

In his words "It is a day when Nigerians voted for transparency in electoral process. June 12 is a day when Nigerians chose to stand on a platform which would help them realise the manifest destiny of their country than cling to primordial sentiments".

He further said that June 12 symbolises the day when all Nigerians paid the price to regain their God-given right in order to have a say in the governance of their country adding that it is also a day when Nigerians embraced demo-cracy and aborted dictatorship.

"June 12 symbolises a day of democracy, liberty, freedom, emancipation and above all, selfless sacrifice of individuals for societal advancement. It signifies a day when Nigerians employed democracy to abort dictatorship", he said.

Noting that the battle for the de-annulment of June 12 election results and the restoration of democracy was substantially fought on the streets of Lagos, Afikuyomi said the sacrifice of Abiola and other heroes and heroines of democracy, known and unknown, to make Nigeria a better place for all, would not be in vain.

"June 12 is a day in which we in Lagos State are remembering the price we collectively paid to regain our God-given right to have a say in the governance of our nation. That the Union fixed same day as its anniversary also underscores the importance of this unique day to all indigenes, descendants, settlers and residents of Lagos for efforts in attracting development to our great state, Lagos", he further stated.
