ALGON Youth Soccer Set for Kick off By Pius Ayinor Nigerian youths across the 774 local government areas in the country will soon get very busy on the field of soccer going by a new initiate under the auspices of All Local Government of Nigeria Youth Soccer Championship christened ALGON Youth Championship. The National Co-ordinator of the nationwide event, Mr. Telema Briggs, in a media presentation in Lagos yesterday said that one of the objectives behind the project is to keep the youths of the country rightfully engaged on the field of football rather than incessant ethnic and religious fights they have found themselves involved with in recent times. "It is an initiate designed to create a forum, using football as acommon ground for getting the youths of Nigeria together to gain knowledge and respect for each other's differences. "We strongly believe that given the right exposure and direction, our youths through sports, particularly football could grow into responsible, dependable and highly purposeful adults in the near future," Briggs said. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, Maj-Gen. Henry Adefope (rtd) at the occasion remarked that the venture was worthwhile and should be given the necessary encouragement. The retired Army officer is member of the Advisory Committee which also has Mr. Chris Eseka and Patrick Okpomo. "ALGON is an opportunity to raise budding footballers. We may already have the likes of Jay Jay Okocha, the Kanus but they are not enough. "It's a worthwhile venture; it's a dream I hope will come to fruitiness this year," Adefope remarked.
