Marwa is serious about presidential
ambition, say campaigners
By Tolu Olarewaju,

The
Marwa Presidential Campaign Group (MPCG) has denied insinuations that the
former Military Governor of Lagos State, Brigadier-General Muhammed Buba
Marwa (rtd), is in politics as an agent of some other politicians,
explaining that he is serious about his presidential ambition, contrary
to stories making the rounds that the retired military officer is
fronting for others angling for the presidency in 2007. According to
them, Marwa’s ambition to rule the country is real.
The
group, in a statement in Lagos, Tuesday, said Marwa’s decision to vie for
the highest position in the land is borne out of pressures from
well-meaning Nigerians from all walks of life.
“We
wish to emphasise that Muhammed Buba Marwa is not a stooge or an errand boy, an agent, a lackey of any sort, acting on
the directive of a power bloc towards the next political dispensation in
2007. His resolve to contest the presidency in 2007 is based on the solid
track record of impeccable integrity and administrative acumen, and
innumerable catalogue of accomplishments which have earned him a place in
the pantheons of the immortals whose names are already carved in gold in
the National Hall of Fame”, said the group.
According
to MPCG, although the former Lagos State chief executive is not yet a
card carrying member of any political party, its central working
committee is considering credible choice of platform among the existing
political parties on which to actualise this vision. The statement said
the campaigners would not be intimidated by existing structures or
antecedents of other
presidential aspirants no matter how formidable.
“We
have set up appropriate political machineries in all the states, local
governments, wards, and the entire nation all aimed at making this noble
vision a reality. Very soon, we shall embark on vigorous mobilisation
drive, aimed at enlisting the active involvement of patriotic Nigerian
citizens who are fervently eager for a new era of positive change which
our respectable leader Mohammed Buba Marwa stands to usher,” the
statement added.
The
group urged those describing Marwa
as a stooge to desist from their campaign of calumny aimed at
smearing his person, with a view to reducing his stature, hamper his
chances and hinder the collective will of the people.
