Govt donates water pumps to Plateau
From Isa Abdulsalami, Jos
TO ensure adequate water supply in the state, the Federal Government has provided about 440 water pumps to Plateau State.
The minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Mustaphar Shehu Shagari, who donated the water pumps on behalf of the government, assured the people of continuous assistance towards alleviating their water problem.
Shagari, who presented 340 pumps to the 17 council, in addition to 100 given to the southern senatorial district of the state, urged the beneficiaries to ensure judicious use of them.
He added that the President has a programme called the "Presidential Initiative on Water for Life", stressing that without water, there would be no human existence.
He explained that the programme is geared towards ensuring that the people in the rural areas have potable water.
In his remarks, the state Administrator, Maj-Gen. Chris Alli (rtd.), said he applauded the initiative, which he said has given hope to the downtrodden.
He said that the state government had established the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), equipped with a newly acquired drilling rig for effective service delivery to the rural areas.
Alli stated that government has drawn an investment plan for the rural water sub-sector to the sum of N1.1 billion for the provision of water supply and sanitation facilities.
"It is on the strength of this that I wish to call on the Federal Government to advance its 50 per cent contribution of this project in accordance with the National Policy on water Supply and Sanitation," he said.
The administrator said this would enhance effective "partnership and set the pace for the ambitious transformation of the water sector in the state".
