Police arrest robbery suspects in Ogun
From Charles Coffie-Gyamfi, Abeokuta

TWO robbery suspects who specialised in robbing passengers travelling on the Lagos-Benin Expressway have been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command.

They were among the nine notorious robbery suspects paraded before journalists yesterday by the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Samuel Adekunle at the command's headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.

The commissioner said the duo of Sunday Azogor and John Abu had on May 22, successfully robbed passengers in a luxury bus marked XA 193 MEN at the Odogbolu end of the expressway.

According to the police boss, men of the Operation Fire-for-Fire unit, acting on a tip-off had confronted the criminals and in an ensuing fire exchange, gunned down three of the hoodlums.

The suspects, he went on, later led the policemen to the robbers' hideout where two G3 riffles, two double-barrel guns and two live cartridges were found.

The police boss said one of the G3 riffles was discovered to have been snatched from a Customs official in one of their previous operations. An ex-convict, one Mr. Samuel Adeyemi who allegedly robbed a woman of a large sum of money was among the paraded suspects.

The other suspects, who according to Adekunle had engaged in separate robbery operations were Sunday Igwe, Monday Nomel, Jamiu Yinusa, Gbenga Olusanya and Musibau Adebayo.

Others were Idowu Musa and Yinka Olowogbade.

The commissioner thanked members of the public for co-operating with the police in their fight against crime and appealed to them to continue to give useful information about suspected criminals to the police.
