NAFDAC destroys defective Indomie Noodles
By Femi Akinkunmi

IN its efforts to rid the nation of sub-standard products, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) yesterday destroyed contaminated Indomie Instant Noodles worth over N20 million.

Speaking with journalists at Solus LAWMA dump site in Lagos where the destruction took place, the Director, Registration and Regulation Affairs Directorate of the organisation, Mrs. Hauwa Keri, said NAFDAC and De-United Limited, makers of Indomie Noodles, were actively involved in the recovery of the contaminated batches.

Keri, who represented the Director Enforcement, NAFDAC, Dioka Ejionume, stated that reports from all states of the federation showed that all the defective batches had been withdrawn from the market and destroyed.

"A total of 21,025 cartons were recalled from distributors and retail outlets throughout Nigeria after NAFDAC's extensive and all-encompassing investigations identified some contaminated batches produced between March 30 and April 4, 2004," she added.

The director assured the public that the contaminated Indomie Noodles were now out of circulation, adding that NAFDAC would always make routine checks and take measures to avoid such occurrence.

She also asserted that NAFDAC offices burnt across the country would not stop the organisation from playing its role of ensuring a fake drug-free society.

Keri thanked the public for its continued co-operation, especially for the prompt response to NAFDAC's enquires during the investigation on Indomie Noodles.

She urged the public to be cautious in purchasing regulated food or drug products and report any untoward effects to the nearest NAFDAC office.
