From Willie Etim, Yenagoa
THE former military administrator of Ebonyi and Delta states, Navy Captain Walter Feghabo (rtd), narrowly escaped death on Tuesday. Officers and men of the joint military task force, ÔÔOperation Restore HopeÕÕ opened fire on the speed boats in which he was touring projects in Bayelsa Sate.
Feghabo, is the chairman of the Bayelsa State Project Monitory Committee and was touring the Ekeremor area along side two serving commissioners Logbonwee and Nelson Azibolanari, when the incident occurred near Ndoro in the Ekeremor Local Council area waterways.
It was reported that the Commander of the squad one Col. S. Ibrahim had ordered the shooting suspecting that the passengers in the boats were sea pirates or restive youths in the Niger Delta area.
But on close interrogation and in the presence of the mobile policemen on escort who surrendered their arms, Faghabo then introduced himself and the commander of the squad told him that he was lucky to have survived the shoot-out.
Some information officers in the State Ministry of Information who accompanied the project monitoring team who where seen celebrating at the state secretariat, told The Guardian that they had cause to celebrate having survived what would have been a massacre.
When The Guardian contacted the retired Navy Captain on phone, he declined comments and rather referred the reporter to the chief press secretary to the governor, on the excuse that he works for the government and that he could not talk on the issue.
Effort to get any other senior government official to re-act to the incident was rebuffed as most of them contacted were not dispose to make comments.
One of the state commissioners, Mr. Oliver Osuchukwu, also told The Guardian he had not heard the report of the incident and that he was expecting the reports from his men.
