Teachers’ salaries are paid as at when due into the banks, but unfortunately the teachers do not know exactly what they earn. There is no voucher raised, no statement of payment or pay-slip issued. It is when the teachers get to the banks that they know what has been paid to them. The disparity in their monthly salaries has made the teachers to feel short-changed. The teachers do not know the deductions made as tax, loan, NUT fees, etc. This has gone to frustrate dedicated and hard-working teachers. When a teacher gets to the bank whatever he or she meets there is his or her pay. Often teachers would discover that they earn far below what their grade levels stipulate officially. I am therefore appealing to the Lagos State government to revive the issuance of pay slips. Teachers should also be allowed to sign the payroll of their salaries before going to the banks to collect their pay. This would give them the opportunity to know what they earn as salaries and what deductions are made from such salaries.
