Obasanjo in Zambia for talks

Friday, June 18, 2004

LUSAKA — PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo has arrived Zambia for a day’s visit during which he is expected to hold talks with his Zambian counterpart, Levy Mwanawasa. Obasanjo, who was met at the airport by Mwanawasa, is also scheduled to meet with two former Zambian presidents, Kenneth Kaunda and Frederick Chiluba on Friday.

Chief Obasanjo said he was in Zambia to hold talks concerning his country and Zambia and denied speculations that the visit was aimed at reconciling Mwanawasa and Chiluba, who is currently on trial on multi-million dollar corruption charges.

“There is no reason why there should be no reconciliation. The three presidents have their own ways of serving their country and Africa. And that is enough ground for reconciliation,” Obasanjo said. Diplomatic sources said Obasanjo’s visit was aimed at finding a solution to the strained relationship between Chiluba and Mwanawasa, who is close to Kaunda.

“The mission is aimed at reconciling the two,” a senior official from Zambia’s foreign affairs ministry earlier said.
Chiluba has been arrested and charged with several counts of corruption, abuse of office and theft of over 40 million dollars and has been denied permission to leave the country.

Chiluba won the presidency in 1991 from Kaunda, who had been in power for 27 years and had instituted a state-dominated economy and single-party rule. In 2001, Chiluba tried to change the constitution to run for a third consecutive term, but the move was vigorously resisted. He then hurriedly hand-picked his successor, Mwanawasa, who, once in office, had parliament strip Chiluba of his presidential immunity so he could be prosecuted.
