Ogun police arrest labour leader

By  Kolade Larewaju
Friday, June 18, 2004

ABEOKUTA—THE Ogun state police command has arrested a labour leader following a letter he wrote to Governor Gbenga Daniel.

The arrested unionist, Mr. Seyi Adebanjo had in a letter as Secretary of the Association of Senior Civil Servants to Governor Daniel asked him to retract within seven days, a statement credited to him that the state government was saving N40m monthly from the discovery of ghost workers.

In the letter ref. no. 10 VOL/111/180 the association said that there was no truth in the statement adding that the claim of the Governor that N240 million has been saved in six months from salaries and pensions being paid to ghost workers was a phantom. The letter dated 15th June, 2004 signed by Mr. Adebanjo said that the claim of the governor has damaged the image of the civil servants and asked the governor to retract the statement or face their wrath.

The letter written through the Head of Service said “in view of the damage the claim and publication have caused the psyche of the state civil servants, we hereby give the state government seven days from the date of this letter within which to amend the false information or the Association will be forced to react.

“It is highly regrettable that the patience of the state civil servants has been tasked to the limit despite being buffetted by starvation wages, high taxation, cut throat housing policy etc.
“The least expectation from the government is for their honour to have been grossly impugned as rogues stealing N40 million every month.”

But a new dimension was yesterday added to the face-off between the civil servants and Governor Daniel with the arrest of Mr. Adebanjo prompting other labour leaders to threaten fire and brimstone.
