YENAGOA — ONE-time Military Governor of Delta and Ebonyi states, Navy Capt. Walter Feghabo (rtd), three Bayelsa State commissioners and seven mobile policemen escaped death by the whiskers, Tuesday, when their boats came under heavy attack from the Joint Military Task Force on Niger Delta “Operation Restore Hope.”
The lucky commissioners are Azibaolanari Nelson, Gideon Ekeuwei and Augustine Lugbenwei, all Special Duties Commissioners in the Governor’s Office for the three senatorial districts of the state.
Navy Capt. Feghabo (rtd) who is the current chairman of the State Project Monitoring and Implementation Committee and others were on their way to inspect ongoing projects in the Bayelsa west senatorial district.
Vanguard learnt the state government officials were moving in two speed boats with armed Mobile Police escort because of the precarious security situation in the area.
It was gathered that as they were approaching Ndoro in Ekeremor Local Government Area of the state, they came under barrage of gunshots from the men of the Joint Military Taskforce on Niger Delta “Operation Restore Hope” presently on special duties in the area who thought they were pirates.
Feghabo and others, including the mobile policemen were said to have taken cover in their boats and that the military men stopped shooting after succeding in disarming the mobile policemen.
The disarmed and embattled policemen were said to have been manhandled by the soldiers and naval men led by one Col. S. Ibraham until Feghabo introduced himself before they were allowed to go.
The officer was said to have told the Bayelsa State government officials that they were lucky to be alive.
When contacted, Navy Capt. Feghabo (rtd) told our correspondent to contact the state government as according to him “I am working for the state.”
However a top government official who confirmed the incident said Feghabo and other members of his entourage were lucky to have escaped unhurt.
