UYO — Eleven health institutions in Akwa Ibom State, among them five hospitals and six polyclinics, have benefitted from equipment and drug donations worth about N7 million by Mobil Producing Nigeria as part of the company’s commitment to improving the health needs of its host communities.
Under the arrangement, the hospital equipment are to be used by the health institutions while the drugs are to be given out free to patients who call for treatment in the benefiting institutions.
The Field Public Affairs Manager of Mobil, Miss Susan Eshett who presented the drugs to the hospitals and polyclinics said the gesture was to demonstrate that companies and even individuals could also bring healthcare to the doorsteps of the needy.
Eshett who said most of the drugs were received by Mobil directly from the manufacturers also explained that the donated drugs were mostly lacking in hospitals in the state.
Commenting on why equipment instead of cash were donated, the Public Affairs Manager said the policy was to avert the situation where cash could be misused.
Said Eshett: “We have also mapped out strategies for the capacity building of institutions across the state through the provision of equipment instead of cash. Institutions that do well would further be assisted while those that do not do well will not benefit anymore.”
The Medical Superintendent of Ikot Ekpene General Hospital, Dr. Samuel Itina who received the items on behalf of the benefitting hospitals, thanked Mobil for the gesture describing the company as a good corporate citizen.
Dr. Itina however called on Mobil to donate more health-care equipment, facilities and drugs to health institutions in the state to enable them offer good quality services to people in the 31 Local Government Areas of the state.
