    Iraq: 35 more killed

    CHINWE MADUAGWU, with agency report

A CAR bomb explosion at an Iraqi Army Recruitment Centre in western Baghdad yesterday killed about 35 people and injured over 130 others.

The car packed with artillery shells, drove into a crowd of about 100 people queuing to volunteer before exploding. The blast was said to have been heard throughout the city.

The centre was housed in an old airport - Muthena Airport - which also served as a military base for American troops.

However, there were no Americans nearby when the explosion occurred.

As at press time, a Health Ministry official said about 138 people have been injured, many of them seriously raising fears that the death toll may likely rise.

Reacting to the incident, a member of the Iraqi Security forces, Yas Khudair, said all the victims of the blast were poor people trying to earn a living. "They wanted to volunter to support their families," he said.

Reports from Baghdad said military installations connected with the new Iraqi security forces were being hit over and over as insurgents increased their resistance ahead of the June 30, hand over date.

Meanwhile (UK) foreign secretary, Jack Sraw has said the attack will not affect the handover.

"We and the Iraqi people will not be deterred. The transfer of power will take place. Iraqis will take control of their lives," he said.
