FHA Destroys Illegal Structures in Festac Town Federal Housing Authority (FHA) yesterday began the demolition of illegal structures and containers erected in FESTAC Town, Lagos. The exercise which caught many people unaware saw some residents making last minute efforts to retrieve their property from the illegal structures before demolition. Addressing newsmen during the exercise, Chairman of the Committee for the demolition of illegal structure, Dr. Esikpo Bassey, stated that the objective of the exercise is poised to restore the pride of FESTAC Town which he alleged was once a model housing estate. Occupants of the illegal structures mostly owners of containers claimed that before erection of their structures they sought permission from FHA, adding that they were made to pay certain amount of money. Some residents of the area, however, see the exercise as a welcome development. The residents argued that land speculators have erected structures on playgrounds meant for recreational activities, adding that the development has caused a lot of inconveniences to the legal occupants.
